Chapter 13

Houston

“You take the test yet?” Cody asked quietly as he came over and poured himself another cup of coffee while Baxley was busy working a puzzle that one of his uncles had brought over for him.

I pushed a hand through my hair as I blew out a breath. “Not yet, and before you say anything—yes, I know I need to do it.” Shaking my head, I held my cup out for him to refill. “This right here? This is one good reason to delay. If I see a positive symbol in the window, I won’t be able to drink coffee anymore, at least not in good conscience.”

Cody looked sad as he stared at me in horror. “You can’t drink coffee if you’re…” He glanced over at the table to make sure Baxley wasn’t paying attention before lowering his voice. “You seriously mean to say that if you’re expectin’, you can’t have coffee?”

I shook my head. “I can have one cup a day, or drink decaf. Either way, it’s rather pointless, am I right?”

“No sh–ah, kidding.” He blushed lightly as he caught himself almost cussing in front of Baxley. “Heck, that would just be a tease.”

“Exactly.” I grinned. Taking my cup, I wandered back over to the table and sat down beside Baxley. “Good job, munchkin. And here I thought you’d need my help.”

Baxley shook his head, his eyes bright with pride. “No, Papa. I’m not a baby anymore, I can do it by myself.” He picked up the puzzle in its wooden frame and handed it to me to admire.

Cody joined us at the table, flipping a chair around and straddling it backwards. I pinched my lips with amusement and wondered how long it would take before Baxley tried to do that. Cody pulled one of the wooden puzzles over from the other side of the table and dumped the pieces out before he put the empty frame in front of Baxley to replace the one he’d just finished.

“Are you gonna help me, Mr. Cody?” Baxley tipped his head back to look at his hero.

Cody shook his head. “Nope. We’re gonna show your papa over there how smart you are. This one has all the shapes we’ve learned. Show your papa which one the circle is and where it goes.”

“That’s easy,” Baxley scoffed as he picked up the circle piece and popped it into place. “Give me a hard one this time.”

“A hard one, huh?” Cody looked up to the side as if deep in thought. “All right, give me the rectangle. Ah-ah. Not the square,” he corrected when Baxley started to reach for the wrong piece, “I said rectangle.”

Baxley nodded competently as he picked up the rectangle and put it into place. He looked over at me with a big smile. “Look, Papa. This one is the square.” He held up the first piece he’d gone for and put it into the frame.

We went through all of the basic shapes, including a diamond and hexagon, which I found impressive.
